What are the 5 Basic Writing Skills?

Greetings, fellow enthusiasts of the written word!
If you’ve found your way here, it’s likely you possess a fervent love for crafting tales or a burning ambition to embark on a storytelling adventure.
You’re in the perfect spot!
In today’s blog post, we’re delving into the bedrock of writing—the five indispensable skills every aspiring writer should hone.
So, gather your cherished notebook, a delightful beverage (hot or cold, as you prefer), and let’s set forth!
The ABCs of Writing
Vocabulary: Building Your Word Arsenal
Writing is a symphony of words, and the more notes you have, the richer your composition.
Expand your vocabulary like a collector amassing rare treasures.
Read widely and keep a dictionary handy.
The right word can transform a simple sentence into a masterpiece.
I love to create a table of vocabulary when I am writing my stories.
For example, when I am writing dialogue between characters, it is very easy to write, “he, she or they said” but instead of doing this, I like to create a table of vocabulary alternatives to keep it interesting and less repetitive so instead of using “said” all the time, I like to include their reaction to what is said, for example, “Alice said” to “Alice mused as she inspected her purple and green swirling tea with aversion”.
My top 3 books that I love to use to help me gain inspiration are:
- The Emotion Thesaurus: A Writer’s Guide to Character Expression by Becca Puglisi
- Show, Don’t Tell: How to write vivid descriptions, handle backstory, and describe your characters’ emotions: Volume 3 (Writers’ Guide Series) by Sandra Gerth
- The Conflict Thesaurus: A Writer’s Guide to Obstacles, Adversaries, and Inner Struggles (Volume 1) by Becca Puglisi
The Art of Storytelling
Imagination: Your Creative Playground
Every great story begins with a spark of imagination.
Cultivate your creativity like a lush garden.
Daydream, explore new worlds, and let your mind roam freely. Imagination is the birthplace of unique characters, thrilling plots, and enchanting settings.
Don’t limit yourself, especially if you are writing fantasy or paranormal stories.
Of course, do your research but play with the traditional aspects of these genres and let your mind and imagination take you to new characters, themes, creatures, etc.
Crafting Your Masterpiece
Grammar and Syntax: The Building Blocks
Think of grammar as the blueprint and syntax as the construction.
Mastering these elements ensures your writing is structurally sound.
Proper grammar and sentence structure create clarity and flow, making it easier for readers to immerse themselves in your story.
If, like myself, you are not amazing with grammar or story structure, why not take a few free online creative writing courses or invest in an editor or proof-reader?
There are also some good editing and proofreading software packages on the internet that can help with grammar, spelling, punctuation, customizable writing suggestions, etc.
Story Structure: The Architect’s Plan
Beneath every enthralling tale lies a meticulously crafted framework.
Master the nuances of plot development, pacing, and character arcs.
Building a compelling narrative structure is akin to erecting a grand citadel, brick by brick.
It took me a considerable amount of time to refine, and the learning journey is ongoing.
The internet offers a wealth of fantastic books that can be invaluable in shaping and planning your story structure.

Editing: The Polishing Touch
Even the most brilliant diamonds require cutting and polishing to shine.
Editing is your final draft’s best friend.
Revise and refine your work, addressing grammar, clarity, and consistency.
The editing process is where your rough gem transforms into a dazzling jewel.
It can be heart-breaking to cut or get rid of some of your paragraphs or even side characters that no longer work with the overall theme of the story but if you truly want your readers to love your work as much as you do then this is an essential stage of the writing process.
